Case Knife Collecting Can Become an Incurable Addiction
Collecting knives is a very fun and interesting hobby. It is also a nice investment when collecting knives from a more prestigious manufacturer like the Case Knife Company.
I want to tell you that Case is not the only manufacturer out there that makes a great line of knives ideal for
collecting. Case is just a company that I prefer and am a collector myself.
Another thing that I really like about Case knives is the company history. They have been in business since 1889 and their products are made in the United States.
One great thing about knife collecting and I mentioned it earlier is the fact that it is an investment. Now you may not be able to compare knife collecting to day trading stocks, but it is an enjoyable investment and can be done at your own pace. I personally like to add one or two knives a month to my collection and that keeps me interested.
If you will take a look at eBay or some individual sites out there, you will see quite a bit of Case knives floating around. You will also find some very nice collections. Once these knives get some age on them and Case stops producing them, their values tend to go up nicely. You will notice this on eBay especially by doing a search and checking out some of the prices.
If you are a beginner in knife collecting and are thinking about going the Case knife route, there are many ways to begin. My advice to you would be to take your time and research a few things that I will explain as we go.
The first thing on the agenda for a beginning collector would be to decide what kind of Case knife you want to start collecting. There are so many out there that diving in can be quite intimidating with all the options available.
Start with choosing a Case knife pattern. There are many of these, but if you choose one you like, you can stick to collecting that pattern for awhile. The pattern will be available in many different handle materials, versions and special editions.
A few examples of some well known Case knife patterns are the Trapper, Stockman, Canoe, Whittler, Muskrat, Sowbelly, Peanut, Texas Toothpick, Elephant Toe, Gunstock, Congress, Barlow, Copperhead and there are many more.
You could even choose one of the new patterns that come out all of the time to start on. The Russlock is a new one that seems to be favored by collectors.
Then, you can take a look at the various special series that come out quite often. Being a Johnny Cash fan, I was fond of the Johnny Cash line that came out. There were a few different patterns in this line such as the Butterbean, Stockman, Trapper and the Tiny Trapper.
Take your time while collecting. There is no need to go out and spend a small fortune right off. The fun in collecting is to add to the collection slowly. I make a ritual out of it. I purchase a Case knife about once a month.
Throughout the month I research and follow the Case company news and start narrowing down what I want. When my weekend comes, I park in front of the computer and study my collection. I then select my new addition and make my purchase.
Another good route to go when collecting is to choose some handle materials that you like and stick with them. You can even focus on a single material and I assure you,
there will be plenty of Case knives produced in that material to keep you occupied.
There are so many materials to list but to name a few; Bone, Buffalo Horn, G-10, Mother of Pearl, Herringbone and the list goes on and on.
One thing a collector should do is to find a good manner to display his or her Case knife collection. I really like shadow boxes. I will do up a little card, about the size of a business card, to put inside the box next to each knife.
The card will have the knife name, materials, blade type, date produced and the date I purchased it. This makes the display very nice and interesting to view.
Another really nice thing about Case is their continuing production of knives, especially the special editions. As I mentioned earlier, I liked the Johnny Cash series. They come out with quite a few like the Silver Eagle Texas Toothpick, the John Wayne series, the Boy Scouts of America series and again, too many to list.
So, dive in and start your collection.
